The two Connect To Sailing seminars take place from 0800-1000 local time on 6 and 7 November under the title 'Training - The Golden Key to the Future of Sailing'. The seminars take place in the morning so they do not conflict with other key ISAF meetings and are open to all delegates attending the Conference.
Focus On Training
The Connect To Sailing seminars this year focus on the management of training programmes, and training at entry level through to training the trainer. The aim is to recognize and highlight the importance of training in MNA programmes for the development of sailing. The seminars also provide the ideal forum for the exchange of best practice, help and guidance to those involved in training and to stimulate a fully interactive debate on the future direction of training.

Over the coming weeks, www.sailing.org will be taking a more in depth look at the speakers and panel of experts assembled for the two seminars

Four years later he was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame by the Herreshoff Marine Museum.

Ian WILLIAMS and his crew celebrate © Gold Cup/Charles ANDERSON |

Ian WILLIAMS of Great Britain yesterday won the 58th annual King Edward VII Gold Cup to decide the winner of stage four of the 2006-2007 World Match Racing Tour with a 3-1 defeat of ISAF Nations Cup winner Mathieu RICHARD (FRA).
WILLIAMS won the first two races, dropped the third and then closed out the series in the fourth race with a one boatlength victory. He and crew Bill Hardesty (bow and tactics), Gerry Mitchell (headsails) and Mark Nicholls (mainsail) finished with a 13-6 record and won $25,000 of the $50,000 prize purse.
'There’ve been moments this week where I’ve lost it and didn’t know what was going on,' said WILLIAMS, 29, of Hamble, England. 'My crew kept me going at all times. It’s just fantastic to have finally won one.'
The win moves WILLIAMS into first place in the Match Racing World Championship standings with 35 points. He leads RICHARD by five points. The events of the World Tour determine the ISAF Match Racing World Champion, who will be crowned in December 2007. A total of 15 events comprise the 2006-’07 World Tour schedule.
RICHARD, sailing with longtime crewmembers Greg EVRARD (mainsail and tactics), Olivier HERLEDANT (headsails) and Yannick SIMON (bow) finished with a 13-4 record and won $10,000. They entered the final as the hottest team in the competition with just one loss in 13 starts, but WILLIAMS was too tough today.
'I’m frustrated because I feel that we could’ve sailed better, especially in the starts,' said RICHARD, 30, Nantes, France. 'I’ve sailed against Ian for a long time and it’s hard to come back against him when he gets the lead.'
Bermudians Given Reason to Celebrate
In the Petite Final, Bermudian Blythe WALKER gave the hometown crowd a reason for celebration when he defeated Eric MONNIN of Switzerland, 3-2, to finish third overall. WALKER and crew Carola COOPER (bow), Somers KEMPE (headsails) and Adam BARBOZA (mainsail and tactics) finished with a 10-10 record and won $5,000. More

20 sailors will receive scholarships from the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity to assist them in qualification and preparation for the 2008 Olympic Sailing Competition in Qingdao, China. Sailors from 14 nations will receive the funding support to help them realize their Olympic dreams in China.
The funding for the scholarships comes from the share of Olympic Games television rights revenue allocated to the National Olympic Committees (NOC) and is managed by Olympic Solidarity. 14 sailors were awarded Olympic Scholarships for Athens, amongst them Rodion LUKA and Georgiy LEONCHUK (UKR) who went on to win the silver medal in the 49er.
The aim of Olympic Solidarity is to organize aid to NOCs recognized by the IOC, in particular those which have the greatest need of it. This aid takes the form of programmes between the IOC and the NOCs, in partnership with the International Sports Federations, if necessary. The scholarships’ first objective is to allow the athletes to qualify and prepare themselves in the best conditions for the Olympic Games, in order to fulfil their dream.
The 20 sailors choosen to receive the scholarship to campaign for Qingdao include established names who are already amongst the medal favourites, as well up and coming names from sailing's younger generation. More

One of Brazil’s biggest and most important sailing competitions of the year got underway yesterday with the start of the Pre-Pan American Games Regatta. Athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela are competing at the Iate Clube of Rio de Janeiro.
In all, there are 346 sailors, some of them aiming for qualification for their countries and testing the course that will be used during the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007. Amongst the line up is Carlos DE MARE (ARG), President of the Pan American Sailing Federation. He is seeking a spot for Argentina in the Lightning class.
Racing In Eight Events
The teams will be competing for eleven spots to be distributed among the participating Pan American events: J/24, Laser, Laser Radial, Lightning, Men’s and Women’s RS:X, Hobie 16 and Snipe. Brazil, as the organizing country, already has guaranteed spots.
Over two days six races will be contested and the worst result will be discarded. On Sunday the Medal Race will take place to decide the final standings. 'This is the Olympic Format and it guarantees the drama until the last day,' explained Nelson ILHA, the Principal Race Officer.
The eight fleets are separated over three courses which are being tested for the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007. Because of the arrival of a cold front, the first start, initially scheduled for 1300 yesterday, began 20 minutes later.
SCHEIDT Back In The Laser
Just a week after picking up the silver medal at the Star Worlds, Brazilian sailing legend Robert SCHEIDT (BRA) leads the Laser fleet after a 3,1,5,1 start. The hosts are also going well elsewhere, with Brazil currently leading in every fleet.
The event is organizing by Federacao Brasileira de Vela e Motor, the Pan American Games Rio 2007 Organizing Committee (CO-RIO), Brazilian Olympic Committee, the Pan American Sailing Federation and hosted at the Iate Clube of Rio de Janeiro.

Untied Internet Team Germany during Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 12 © ACM 2006/Carlo BORLENGHI |
America's Cup - Neal MCDONALD (GBR), skipper in the two most recent Volvo Ocean Races and mainsail trimmer and tactician for the America’s Cup challenger Sydney ’95 is the latest recruit to the Swedish Victory Challenge. Morgan LARSON (USA) has also joined the team for this third America’s Cup. More The first German America’s Cup challenger, United Internet Team Germany, is hoping to make its mark during the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2007, after a somewhat disappointing and frustrating 2006 campaign.
The team won just five matches over the course of the season, and four of those came over the struggling China Team. A win over Shosholoza was the lone exception. The fleet racing of Louis Vuitton Act 11 did not provide any solace either…the team finished in eleventh place, ahead of China Team, but well back of everyone else.
So the theme of 2006 was that the Germans struggled to find enough pace with GER 72. With a slow boat, competitive racing was all but out of the question. The good news is that GER 89 has arrived and early indications are that it feels good. More
