470 Men and Women Regattas Conclude,
Soling SemiFinals Rained Out
Great racing on the ocean in the early afternoon for the final races of the Men's and Women's 470 Classes. Thunderstorms brought large windshifts late, postponing match racing for course changes. Then it rained continuously for several hours, forcing abandonment of the Soling semi-finals.
Women's 470
Gold to Spain, Silver to Japan, Bronze to Ukraine.
Teresa Zabell and Begona Via Dufresne of Spain captured the Gold Medal in the women's 470, repeating their performance of 1992. Second place went to Yumiko Shige and Alicia Kinoshita of Japan, third to Ruslana Taran and Olena Pakholchik of Ukraine. US hopes for a medal were lost when Kristina Stookey and Louise van Voorhis finished eleventh in the final race. They were tied in points with Ukraine going into the final race.
Men's 470:
Gold to Ukraine, Silver to Great Britain, Bronze to Portugal
With a 13 point lead over Great Britain and low throwout race scores, Ukraine's did not need to sail the final race to win the gold and elected not to sail. Only one point separated Great Britain's John Merricks and Ian Walker and Portugal's Hugo Rocha and Nuno Barreto going in (49 and 50 points each). Great Britain placed 12th, Portugal 16th, with throwouts they ended up with 61 and 62 points respectively.
