Olympic Games 1996

IYRU Olympic Update

29 JULY 1996

The Parties have started...

The Olympic Regatta was not over, however sailors had already turned on a partying mode last night. The crowd was highly international at one of Savannah's famous river front bars with Brazilians, Irish, South Africans, Polish, Russians and otherscheering the young Polish sailor Mateusz Kusznierewicz who had just secured his Gold medal in the Finn class. It was also encouraging to see Polish and Russian federation members and sailors talking "the same language." 37 year old Oleg Khoperski (RUS) had a broad grin on his face when, looking at the junior Mateusz, he said "He makes me look like history now!" Oleg is competing in his third Olympics and is placed in 18th position. The bar started emptying at around 02:00 hours but promises to be just as hot tonight!

Medals are scheduled to be presented this evening, 29 July 1996, for Men's Board (Mistral, Women's Board (Mistral), Men's Single-handed Dinghy (Finn) and Two-person Keelboat (Star).
