OLYMPIC UPDATE 6/26/96
Final results for the Champagne Mumm Olympic Classes Beach Regatta. Boats get one point for winning a race, two for finishing second, three for third, and so on. After discarding their worst individual finish, the boat with the lowest overall score wins.
The three day event showed a strong Tornado field that included what may be the medal contenders, and the conditions were somewhat similar to what they may see around Wassaw sound during the Games.
The general consesus was, again, that the purpose of this race was not so much to check out the competition, but just to get a feel for the conditions.
The winner of the Europe, Carolina Toll, won't even be going to the Olympics for her country. In five of the six classes, sailors were using boats they won't be during the Games.
The Olympic organizers will supply complete rigs - hull, mast, boom and sail for the Laser and men's and women's Mistral. The hulls in the Finn and Europe will also be provided, but they will be allowed to bring their own masts, booms and sails for those two classes. This will either give a particular sailor a mental advantage, or psych them out.
