IYRU Olympic Update

Report from Savannah -- July 10

As of Sunday, about 50% of the teams have checked in at the Village - the Marriott - but many are still boat-less waiting out shipping and delivery. Security going up a notch each day. Food service at the Marriott is excellent, great variety and quality. Weather has hampered the last few days of training, lots of rain and wind in the afternoons.

AS OF 1100 HRS 10.07, THE OLYMPIC YACHTING VENUES ARE UNDER A HURRICANE ALERT.

Hurricane Bertha is expected to pass about 100 miles to the east of Savannah sometime during the day of 11.07. Already, Savannah is getting large swells in the sea, and with the approach of the hurricane, very light winds. The Olympic Day Marina will close at 1600 hrs 10.07, and the Olympic Harbor will close at 1800; all boats must be secured to the ground, or tied down on the barges (Day Marina), with masts removed and tied down.

All Venues will be CLOSED all day 11.07, for the expected high waves, winds, and rain. It is hoped that everything will reopen on Friday, 12.07, but it is very possible that there will be no sailing with the strong winds and high waves on the back of the hurricane.
