Olympic Games 1996

IYRU Olympic Update

OLYMPIANS REMAIN IN SAVANNAH

19 JULY 1996 Approximately two-thirds of the sailors in Savannah will be making the trip to Atlanta for the Opening Ceremony of the Centennial Olympic Games. Travelling by coach, it is estimated to take approximately four hours travelling time and it is anticipated that the sailors will not return to Savannah until 05:00 hours on Saturday, 20th July 1996.

Of the sailors remaining in Savannah, some were this afternoon out on the water putting in their final practises and fine tuning.

Asked why they chose to remain in Savannah sailing, rather than go to Atlanta the Chinese Team Leader Shuxia MENG said: "it is a long trip to atlanta and that is the only reason we are not going."

"i did some work on my sail and need to test it and take some rest with only two days to go until competition. i thought about it (going to atlanta) but it is a very long way and in high temperatures," said the Croatian Finn Sailor Karlo KURET.
