Who is IZZY?
Though IZZY is strictly for kids, his story is loaded with imagery and symbolism of the Olympic Games. IZZY's animated television special aired in the fall of 1995 and told the tale of a mythical land inside the Olympic torch. Its inhabitants are charged with keeping the Olympic spirit burning bright. After a heroic deed, the torch world's council of elders awards IZZY the chance to fulfill his dream of going to the real Olympic Games. But first, he must prove he is worthy. IZZY encounters one challenge after another to earn five magic rings, each representing a different Olympic quality -- perseverance, excellence, integrity, sportsmanship and brotherhood. Coreba, a spunky but wise women, is his mentor along the way. Her name is the feminine version of the Greek name Coroebus of Elis -- the first recorded Olympian who ran the foot race known as the stade in 776 BC.
