OLYMPIC HISTORY
When the International Olympic Committee allowed an extra class into the Olympic Games in 1976, the IYRU decided that this should be a multihull. The Tornado was designed in the autum of 1967 by Rodney March, Terry Pierce, and Reg White, specifically for the purpose of being the new Olympic Catamaran and was chosen by the IYRU.
The Tornado's first appearance was at the 1976 Olympic Regatta in Kingston, Canada.

THE BOATS AT THE OLYMPICS
Competitors shall supply their own boats, sails and equipment for the Tornado Class. The boats must be presented with a valid measurement certificate and, where required by the Class Rules, the completed measurement form and will be subject to full measurement.
Equipment will be limited as follows, except where the Olympic Regatta Measurement Committee approves replacement of damaged or lost items:
- One Mast
- One Mainsail
- Two Jibs
- Two Rudders
- Two Centreboards
