WOMEN'S SINGLE-HANDED DINGHY INTERNATIONAL EUROPE CLASS

OLYMPIC HISTORY

The Europe dinghy was chosen as the boat for the new women's single-handed discipline by the International Yacht Racing Union in November 1988.

The Europe first appeared at the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona

THE BOATS AT THE OLYMPICS

All Europe Hulls will be supplied by ACOG for the 1996 Olympic Regatta. The Europe dinghies have been built by AB Finessa Batar of Sweden.

Sailors are permitted to bring their own rigs, which is limited to two masts, one boom and two sails, except where the Olympic Regatta Measurement Committee approves replacement of damaged or lost items.

EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY ACOG

Each hull supplied by ACOG will be equipped with the following:

  • a braided synthetic mainsheet not less than 8m long
  • a centerline swivel ratchet block
  • a mainsheet traveler track on the thwart complete with traveler carriage, mainsheet block, associated control lines, lead blocks and two cleats for the control lines, one mounted on each side deck
  • a screw adjustable mast step
  • a pair of adjustable toe straps, together with associated control lines, lead blocks and two jam cleats, one mounted on each side deck
  • two self-bailers
  • rudder blade and matching rudder stock fitted with a tiller, a tiller extension and swivel joint, a pin for securing the rudder blade in the fully down position
  • control lines for adjustment of the kicking strap, cunningham eye, clew outhaul and tack inhaul together with associated pulleys, fixings, cleats for each (eight in total) one for each fitted on each side deck
  • a shockcord JC strap for holding out the boom together with an associated single sheave block and shackle suitable for securing to the stem towing eye
  • a towing eye at the stem
  • a painter
  • a protest flag

WHAT CHANGES CAN A COMPETITOR MAKE TO THIS SUPPLIED EQUIPMENT

(a) The competitor may:

  • shorten the mainsheet and control lines
  • fit an anti-spray sleeve from the mast to deck ring
(b) Upon written request, representatives of ACOG may:

  • fit not more than two retaining clips for water bottles
  • shorten the tiller
  • attach a tiller extension and joint assembly supplied by the competitor
  • fit a retaining clip for a Silva 73R Mini Racing Compass*

* A compass may be provided by the competitor. It shall only be placed in the hatch provided or in the Silva bracket.
