The boats sailed in the 1996 Olympics have all been chosen by the International Yacht Racing Union, after extensive debate and consideration. There are 8 different boats in the Games.

The IMCO -- Mistral sailboard, sailed by both men and women as separate disciplines.
The 470 -- a double handed dinghy, sailed by both men and women as separate disciplines.
The Finn -- a single handed dinghy sailed by men
The Europe -- a single handed dinghy sailed by women
The Tornado -- a multi hull catamaran sailed by a two person crew
The Laser -- a single handed dinghy sailed by either men or women
The Star -- two person keelboat
The Soling -- keelboat for fleet and match racing, sailed by a crew of three
