OLYMPIC HISTORY
The 470, so-called after its length in centimetres, first appeared at the 1976 Olympic Regatta, as the double-handed dinghy open.
In 1988, the double-handed discipline changed from being open to two separate disciplines, for men and women. Therefore 1998 was when the first Olympic Women's double-handed event took place.

THE BOATS AT THE OLYMPICS
Competitors shall supply their own yachts, sails and equipment for the 470 Class. The boats must be presented with a valid measurement certificate and, where required by the Class Rules, the completed measurement form and will be subject to full measurement.
Equipment will be limited as follows, except where the Olympic Regatta Measurement Committee approves replacement of damaged or lost items:
